pH?
What is it? Why is it important in a swimming pool?
-
pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution
- It is important to keep pool pH at, or very close to, 7.4 for several reasons
- Human eyes have a pH of 7.4 - so correct pH will avoid red, stinging eyes
- Chlorine compounds used for pool sanitizing are at their most efficient at pH 7.4
- High pH causes lime-scale on pool surfaces, pipes, fittings and the media in the filter
- The pool surfaces become rough and scaly, and the sand-filter turns to stone
- Those are very expensive problems
- Circulation is reduced and the pool is in serious danger of going green
- Low pH corrodes metals and creates metal oxides, which stain pool surfaces
- Grout, plaster and the pool surround are dissolved by the acidic water, leaving the pool-owner with another expensive, unnecessary bill
- If pH is outside the ideal range of 7.2 to 7.6 it will damage your pool and cost you money
- The solution is an Automatic pH Controller
- These devices measure the pH of the water as it circulates
- The regulator injects tiny quantities of Hydrochloric Acid (which is a much cheaper chemical than pH-minus powder) to bring the pH back to the optimum of 7.4
- Once the pH of the water has been stabilised the consumption of Pool Chemicals will plummet, returning significant cash savings for years to come and making the pool a more pleasant place to be
- Lime-scale will be eradicated, the grout, pump and filter will last longer and the water will have a better ‘feel’ and colour
- All in all, an Auto pH Regulator is a sound investment
