In Ground Pools

- the commonest types of In-ground pool installations are: -

Gunite

Poured Concrete

Glass-fibre (GRP)

Vinyl-Liner

As said earlier on this site; a pool is a pool is a pool but there are several consideration to take into account when deciding what type of pool you want. All pools, whatever their position relative to the ground-level, require basically the same in terms of circulation, filtration, sanitation and care-and-maintenance

The endless flexibility of concrete as a building material gives the designer far greater scope when drawing plans for your new pool but the overall construction costs are something to think about - long and hard. Please read 'Small is Beautiful' - this article applies equally to in-ground and above-ground pools and might save you a truckload of hard cash

In-ground Pools Pros

  • An in-ground swimming pool looks great in any backyard (just my opinion!)
  • No restrictions on in-pool features like a picnic table, seating, steps, spa-bath area, size, shape or depth
  • This is particularly true with a Gunite or Poured-concrete pool
  • Can be built deep enough to allow safe diving (above-ground pools are generally too shallow)
  • More durable than most above-ground pools
  • Less prone to accidental damage
  • More likely to add value to the property - but don't count on it!

In-ground Pools Cons

  • Not all property purchasers are willing to have a pool on the site; in-ground pools are costlier to remove if and when you decide to move house
  • Far more expensive to build - possibly as much as ten times as much as an above-ground pool of similar surface area
  • If not built correctly may suffer from subsidence or a broken back - either of which is horrendously expensive to rectify
  • Easier to fall into and therefore less safe than an above-ground pool
  • May increase your taxes due to the increased property value
