Electric heaters

Elcro Electric Pool Heater

A pool heater that runs directly from the mains power supply is the cheapest type of heater to buy - but one of the most expensive to run. (There's STILL no such thing as a free lunch!)

Whilst they are great for a smaller, above-ground pool with only a few cubic metres of water, where the cost of a Heat-pump or other form of pool heating would be disproportionate to the cost of the pool, heating a large pool directly from mains electricity can be expensive in most places in the world

However there are cost effective ways to run a direct electric pool heater for large domestic & even commercial pools. If your property has 'Economy 7" (or a similar, cheaper Off-peak rate) then what many users decide to do is to run the Electric Heater overnight to take advantage of the cheaper electricity rates, which can by typically as little as one-third of the standard unit rate

Here you can see a price-per-unit comparison chartprice-per-unit comparison chart from Wikipedia; it's not fully up to date but you'll be able to get an idea of what it might cost you per kilowatt hour in your country

Given that they are relatively inexpensive to buy, electric pool heaters are the best solution as a back-up heater for solar or heat-pump heating, for those days when either the sun is not shining and the solar-powered heater delivers little heat or for really cold days when a heat-pump cannot operate, or runs at a lower efficiency
