Certikin Oil-fired Pool Heater

Oil Heaters

Oil-fired pool-heating is very similar to gas-fired heating; oil is burned directly in a furnace to produce the heat which is then transferred to the pool either via a heat-exchanger or directly from the circulation coils within the heater

Oil was once a popular choice with residential pool-owners but is less common nowadays. Nevertheless, it's a pool-heating solution that is worth consideration, especially if you already have oil-fired central heating to your property or if you live in a country where heating oil is cheap

One thing worth consideration is to have an Oil-fired Heater as the principal heater but to also have an Electric Heater

Using the Electric Heater during off-peak hours when electricity is cheap - sometimes as little as one-third of peak-rate prices - can produce considerable reduction in overall heating costs

Basically they are the same as a central heating boiler, sometimes with the addition of a heat-exchanger to transfer the heat to the pool-water. Oil-fired heaters warm a pool quickly and efficiently

An oil-fired heater burns fuel and releases hot exhaust gasses, some of which are in the form of Carbon Monoxide (CO)

CO is poisonous and therefore flue location and ventilation are very important. Flues should not terminate near to a door or window, for example, or inside a building or beneath overhanging trees.  This might seem obvious but it was not at all obvious to the installers of some oil-burners we have seen!

Don't take any chances with installation because an incorrectly installed, or incorrectly vented, oil heater can produce carbon monoxide (CO) and prolonged exposure to CO kills

Please don't be scared off by the above - oil heaters are perfectly understood technology and they work very well. A correctly installed oil boiler is perfectly safe. There are plenty of them working away, right this minute, in complete safety

Oil Pool Heaters Pros

  • Very efficient
  • Heat a pool swiftly
  • Fairly economic to run (but don't forget to use your pool-cover)
  • Quiet in operation
  • Reliable

Oil Pool Heaters Cons

  • Installation must be done by a Professional - i.e. this is not a DIY job
  • Professional installers don't work cheap
  • Ditto for any servicing or repairs required
  • Running costs depend upon oil prices - which can vary seasonally
  • An oil storage tank is required

Certikin Gas-fired Pool Heater

Gas Heaters

Gas pool-heating is a popular choice with pool-owners, for excellent reasons, and is definitely one to consider if you already have a natural gas supply to

your property

Basically they are the same as a central heating boiler, plus a heat-exchanger to transfer the heat into the pool-water

Gas heaters warm a pool quickly, and fairly efficiently, but it is vital that they are installed by a qualified gas engineer in accordance with the appropriate gas regulations

Using a gas-fired heater with an electric heater running on an economy tariff at night is more economic than relying on gas alone

Certikin Gas-fired Pool Heater

If in any doubt as to the competence of the installer, ask to see their up-to-date Certification.  A qualified, Professional Gas Installer will not be offended by this - they want to weed out the cowboys in their Industry

Warning: - Don't take any chances with installation because an incorrectly installed, or incorrectly vented, gas heater can release carbon monoxide (CO) and prolonged exposure to CO kills. That would be a bad start to any pool-party

Please don't be scared off by the warning above - gas heaters are very well understood technology and they work perfectly well. A correctly installed gas boiler is perfectly safe. There are millions of them working away, right this minute, in complete safety

Gas Pool Heaters Pros

  • Fairly efficient, particularly if coupled with an off-peak electric heater
  • Heat a pool swiftly
  • Fairly economic to run (but don't forget to use your pool-cover)
  • Quiet in operation
  • Reliable
  • Can run on natural gas or Propane

Gas Pool Heaters Cons

  • Installation must be done by a Professional - i.e. this is not a DIY job
  • Professional installers don't work cheap
  • Ditto for any servicing or repairs required
  • Running costs depend upon gas prices - which can vary seasonally
  • Storage are required for at least 2 gas bottles if you're using Propane
  • Older models of gas heaters can be inefficient

Elcro Electric Pool Heater

Electric heaters

A pool heater that runs directly from the mains power supply is the cheapest type of heater to buy - but one of the most expensive to run. (There's STILL no such thing as a free lunch!)

Elecro In-Line+ Electric Pool Heater     -     3 Kw to 24 Kw

Whilst they are great for a smaller, above-ground pool with only a few cubic metres of water, where the cost of a Heat-pump or other form of pool heating would be disproportionate to the cost of the pool, heating a large pool directly from mains electricity can be expensive in most places in the world

However there are cost effective ways to run a direct electric pool heater for large domestic & even commercial pools. If your property has 'Economy 7" (or a similar, cheaper Off-peak rate) then what many users decide to do is to run the Electric Heater overnight to take advantage of the cheaper electricity rates, which can by typically as little as one-third of the standard unit rate

Here you can see a price-per-unit comparison chartprice-per-unit comparison chart from Wikipedia; it's not fully up to date but you'll be able to get an idea of what it might cost you per kilowatt hour in your country

Given that they are relatively inexpensive to buy, electric pool heaters are the best solution as a back-up heater for solar or heat-pump heating, for those days when either the sun is not shining and the solar-powered heater delivers little heat or for really cold days when a heat-pump cannot operate, or runs at a lower efficiency

Electric heater Pros

  • The least expensive type of heater to buy
  • Very simple to install
  • Very reliable
  • Totally silent
  • Needs very little space in the pump-room
  • No gas, oil or wood deliveries (or storage) required

Electric heater Cons

  • Can be costly to run
  • Some Countries or States forbid the use of this type of heater

Solar pool heating

- free heat from the sun

Solar pool heaters are energy efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to other forms of pool heating. Global warming? - bring it on!

  • Sunshine provides the free heat and the only costs (other than initial purchase and installation) are for a small pump to circulate the water through the system
  • Note: - many solar systems utilize the existing pool-pump for circulation
  • Solar heating is well-understood technology and is used in many countries worldwide, not just for pools - for household heating and hot water also
  • Generally speaking, the larger the surface area of the solar panel or heat-collector, the more heat they will collect; a collector area of approx 50-65% of the surface area of the pool is adequate
  • One of our clients in Portugal has a home-designed system of 2 Km (2165 yd) of black, 25mm (1") polypropylene pipe, coiled and spread out over several hundred square meters of dark gravel, coupled to a storage tank, which provides hot water and under-floor heating to 2 houses and  heats the pool with 'leftover' heat (mind you, he's a plumber and probably didn't charge himself the full Plumbers Rate!)
  • The heat-collectors can be of the vacuum tube type, rubber or plastic tube-mats or pipes for roof-top installation - and there are even systems that are installed in a roof-space, under a tiled terrace or the asphalt of a driveway
  • Solar heaters are often backed up with an Electric Heater running on overnight cheap-rate electricity, which can be as little as one-third the price of peak-rate costs

Solar Pool Heater Pros

  • Very environmentally friendly way to extend the pool-season
  • Extremely low operating costs
  • Running cost savings will pay for the heater and installation many times over
  • No deliveries or storage of oil, gas or wood required
  • Sunshine is unlikely to rise in price; all other fuels will definitely get more expensive
  • Can be used in conjunction with other forms of pool heating for all-year-round swimming

Solar Pool Heater Cons

  • Dependant on sunshine for efficient operation
  • Can be expensive to purchase
  • Ditto to install
