Oil-fired pool-heating is very similar to gas-fired heating; oil is burned directly in a furnace to produce the heat which is then transferred to the pool either via a heat-exchanger or directly from the circulation coils within the heater
Oil was once a popular choice with residential pool-owners but is less common nowadays. Nevertheless, it's a pool-heating solution that is worth consideration, especially if you already have oil-fired central heating to your property or if you live in a country where heating oil is cheap
One thing worth consideration is to have an Oil-fired Heater as the principal heater but to also have an Electric Heater
Using the Electric Heater during off-peak hours when electricity is cheap - sometimes as little as one-third of peak-rate prices - can produce considerable reduction in overall heating costs
Basically they are the same as a central heating boiler, sometimes with the addition of a heat-exchanger to transfer the heat to the pool-water. Oil-fired heaters warm a pool quickly and efficiently
An oil-fired heater burns fuel and releases hot exhaust gasses, some of which are in the form of Carbon Monoxide (CO)
CO is poisonous and therefore flue location and ventilation are very important. Flues should not terminate near to a door or window, for example, or inside a building or beneath overhanging trees. This might seem obvious but it was not at all obvious to the installers of some oil-burners we have seen!
Don't take any chances with installation because an incorrectly installed, or incorrectly vented, oil heater can produce carbon monoxide (CO) and prolonged exposure to CO kills
Please don't be scared off by the above - oil heaters are perfectly understood technology and they work very well. A correctly installed oil boiler is perfectly safe. There are plenty of them working away, right this minute, in complete safety
