sack of washing soda or soda ash

Sodium Carbonate

- AKA 'Soda Ash' or 'Washing Soda' -  is more alkaline than Sodium Bicarbonate

  • It is cheaper to buy at a cleaning-products supplier than at a pool shop
  • Soda Ash increases low pH levels caused by regular use of an acidic Chlorine donor such as Trichloro
  • Add 350g of soda ash for each Kg of Trichlor used, or 5oz for every pound
  • Do not add more than 500g (1 pound) per 50m³ (13.000 US Gals) in any 24 hour period and keep bathers out of the pool for 12 hours after application
  • Therefore this chemical is best added at night after the pool has been finished with for the day
  • If TA is over 120 ppm, adding soda ash may cause your water to become cloudy
  • Sodium Carbonate is mildly toxic and ingestion of large doses causes gastro-intestinal problems, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhoea, vomiting, collapse and even fatalities
  • High doses of inhaled dust can cause respiratory irritation, coughing and breathing difficulties plus damage to nasal tissue
  • Eye contact is a serious problem - rinse immediately with copious quantities of clean, fresh water (NOT pool water) and seek medical advice as soon as possible

Sodium Bicarbonate

- chemical formula NaHCO³ - AKA Bicarbonate of Soda, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and/or Baking Soda - is an inexpensive chemical used to increase the Total Alkalinity (TA) of the water and is the only chemical that can perform this vital task without affecting the pH to any great degree

  • Sodium Bicarbonate is supplied as a free-flowing white powder
  • It is identical to the baking soda available in grocery outlets and that's the place to buy it because it is far cheaper at a supermarket than at a pool-shop; and often of a higher purity
  • Remember that Total Alkalinity is a measure of the bicarbonates in the water, so clearly adding more bicarbonates will raise TA, which ideally should be in the range of 80-120ppm
  • Aim to raise the TA to just inside this range as it will rise over time due to the small quantities of bicarbonates in make-up water
  • Dosage to raise TA is 1Kg per 50m³ of water, or 1½ pounds per 10,000 US Gals, to raise TA by 10ppm
  • Add the Sodium Bicarbonate pre-dissolved in pool-water and distribute it around the pool with the pump on - then wait for 4 hours before re-testing the pH and TA
  • Adjust pH as required but if TA has not yet reached the optimum level you should wait for 4 days before adding more to give the chemistry time to 'catch-up'
  • It may take some time to get the correct level of TA with Sodium Bicarbonate but the final results are worth the wait as it will help you to control pH
  • No special precautions are need to transport, handle or store this inoffensive compound but avoid breathing the dust or fumes of any pool chemical

pH-Plus

- chemical formula Na²CO³ - AKA Sodium Carbonate, Washing Soda and Soda Ash - is used to raise pH levels in pools. The natural tendency is for pH to rise in pools, especially if the principal Chlorine donor is Trichloro

  • pH-plus is a supplied as a water-soluble, white powder
  • Low pH pool-water is corrosive and can damage equipment like heat-exchangers and pumps
  • It will also erode metals, grout and plaster
  • Both low and high pH level reduces the effectiveness of all Chlorine sanitizers
  • A pH level of between 7.2 and 7.6 is ideal
  • Note: - Total Alkalinity should be in the range of 80-120ppm before adjusting pH. If TA is low adjust with Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Pre-dissolve the product in a clean plastic container and add it to the pool near to the return jets with the pump running to aid thorough mixing
  • This chemical dissolves quicker in warm water
  • Run the pump for 4 hours to ensure that the pH-plus has been thoroughly mixed with the water and, if necessary, apply more Na²CO³ to raise the pH to the optimum of 7.2 - 7.6

3D sodium thiosulphate molecule

Sodium Thiosulphate

- also known as Chlorine Neutralizer - chemical formula Na²S²O³ - is used to rid the pool of high Chlorine levels if you have accidentally overdosed or want to use the pool soon after Superchlorination

  • It is supplied as a colourless, granulated, crystalline substance with a pH of 8.0
  • It is safe to handle but, like al pool chemicals, the dust should not be inhaled
  • Pre-dissolve it in water and add it at a rate of 175g per 50m³ or 4oz per 10000 US Gals to reduce Chlorine by 1ppm
  • Do not overdose with Sodium Thiosulphate or you could find yourself with a Chlorine deficit for a period of time, as all the Chlorine added is immediately destroyed by the Neutralizer
