- AKA 'Soda Ash' or 'Washing Soda' - is more alkaline than Sodium Bicarbonate
- It is cheaper to buy at a cleaning-products supplier than at a pool shop
- Soda Ash increases low pH levels caused by regular use of an acidic Chlorine donor such as Trichloro
- Add 350g of soda ash for each Kg of Trichlor used, or 5oz for every pound
- Do not add more than 500g (1 pound) per 50m³ (13.000 US Gals) in any 24 hour period and keep bathers out of the pool for 12 hours after application
- Therefore this chemical is best added at night after the pool has been finished with for the day
- If TA is over 120 ppm, adding soda ash may cause your water to become cloudy
- In this case use Sodium Bicarbonate instead
- Sodium Carbonate is mildly toxic and ingestion of large doses causes gastro-intestinal problems, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhoea, vomiting, collapse and even fatalities
- High doses of inhaled dust can cause respiratory irritation, coughing and breathing difficulties plus damage to nasal tissue
- Eye contact is a serious problem - rinse immediately with copious quantities of clean, fresh water (NOT pool water) and seek medical advice as soon as possible
