Multi Action tablets

Multiaction Tablets

-are composite tablets containing the Chlorine (as Trichlor) that you need to keep the pool sanitized - plus a few added extras. They are also known as Multi-Function Tablets

Each manufacturer has their own formula for the mix of compounds in their product and, according to the blurb on the container, the extras may include Chlorine Stabiliser (as Cyanuric Acid), a Flocculant a (as Aluminium Sulphate) , an Algaestat, a Fungistat, a Bacteristat, Copper Sulphate, pH-reducer (as Sodium Bisulphate) and various other chemicals, (like perhaps a sprinkling of Tinkerbelle's Patent Fairy Dust?)

And they very possibly do; but is that a good thing? In our opinion it's a bad thing and here's why

To keep the pool sanitized we need to add Chlorine - this is not in dispute. What is in dispute is whether all the other added chemicals are going to be good for the pool or bad for the pool

Look at it this way; if the tablet contains more than just Chlorine it's clearly not pure Chlorine, so it will not raise Chlorine levels by as much as a pure Trichloro product

Any other chemicals included in the mix add to the Total Dissolved Solids, cause a build-up of undesirables and bring forward the time at which you need to partially or completely drain the pool and refill it with fresh water

Chlorine is added to a pool to keep it sanitized and if the Chlorine donor is Triclor or Dichlor there is no need for added Cyanuric Acid because in water that is kept at the ideal of pH 7.4, or close to it, the Chlorine will produce Hypochlorous Acid (sanitizer) AND Cyanuric Acid (stabilizer) in the correct proportions

Moving on to the Flocculant part of the tablet:- why would you need a Flocculant if the pool is healthy and the water is clear?

Copper Sulphate is a very good preventative treatment for Algae but it has one major drawback inasmuch as it never leaves the pool other that by partial dilution when a filter is back-washed and the pool is then topped up with fresh water

So the concentration of Copper Sulphate rises inexorably and eventually reaches the point where it will stain plaster and grout, and turn hair and nails a blue-ish green. The blue spots in the tablet shown above are Copper Sulphate; scattered throughout like raisins in a bun

Trichloro produces Hypochlorous Acid when dissolved in water, as mentioned above. Hypochlorous Acid IS, amongst other things an Algaestat, a Fungistat and a Bacteristat. So you don't need an extra dose of an Algaestat, Fungistat or Bacteristat

Follow the 'most economic' routine below and you won't go far wrong: -

Maintain a Chlorine level of 1-3ppm and never let it drop below 1ppm

Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 but strive for the ideal of 7.4 pH

Superchlorinate every 2 weeks at dusk with Sodium Hypochlorite - a very inexpensive chemical

Add Copper Sulphate no more frequently than twice a year

Use a Flocculant only when it's needed (or use Jolly Gel at any time)

PS - It's very unlikely that Multi-action tablets contain Fairy Dust, or even that such a substance exists; the manufacturers would just like you to think it does. Like most businesses they'll happily sell you things you don't need all day long!

1-part Bromine Container

1 part Bromine

- tablets are actually a compound of Bromine and Chlorine. The Chlorine component is used to oxidize the bromine to produce HOBr and hypobromite ions

  • Bromine tablets for sanitizing pools provide an available Bromine level of 63% and an available Chlorine level of about 30%
  • One-part Bromine is most commonly available as tablets, granules or powder
  • It has a long shelf life, is very slow dissolving, and works extremely well in floating and erosion feeders
  • Bromine tablets are acidic and can harm equipment or pool plaster if improperly used
  • To prevent the pool becoming acidic it is necessary to add about 200gms of Sodium Hydroxide for each Kg of Bromine tablets used
  • 70kg of Bromine tablets are needed to sanitize a pool of 5 x 10 meters for 1 year
  • A 5x10m Bromine-sanitized pool requires about 30 kg of Calcium Hypochlorite or peroxymonosulphate to oxidize away the bromamines formed from the swimmer waste

Hypo-Cal container

Calcium Hypochlorite

- Cal-Hypo is also known as bleaching powder and, confusingly, as Hypo-Cal

  • Cal-hypo is a stable substance and can be stored for long periods of time without significant loss in available chlorine level
  • Supplied in granular form or as tablets, it can be used for regular chlorination as well as for Superchlorination
  • It should be pre-dissolved in water and then added as a liquid to the pool when needed, via the skimmer
  • Cal-hypo is classified as an ‘extreme oxidizer’ which is why it bleaches so well
  • All the other types of Chlorine are classified as ‘oxidizers’, with the exception of Chlorine Gas, which is also an extreme oxidizer
  • Do not mix Cal-hypo with anything but water; mixing with organic substances may cause a fire
  • Exercise extreme caution when sweeping-up in chemical-storage areas
  • Mixing the dust and spillage of various products together may cause a fire to start; so clean up product spills separately
  • Cal-hypo, either in granule or powder form, will turn the water slightly cloudy initially because the Calcium takes time to dissolve
  • Cal-hypo granules can bleach and weaken vinyl liners or PVC pool surfaces. Therefore, use a feeder or pre-dissolve it in water before adding it
  • Use of Cal-hypo will increase the Calcium Hardness level by an average of 3 to 10 ppm per month, making it advisable to test the hardness level in the pool more frequently
  • 50kg of Cal-hypo will provide the same amount of Chlorine as 250 litres of liquid Chlorine or 30kg of Chlorine Gas
  • If Cal-hypo is the principal sanitizer Cyanuric Acid should be added separately to prevent the Chlorine in the pool from degradation by sunlight

Non-Chlorine Shock

- an alternative to Superchlorination

  • The active ingredient in non-chlorine shock products is potassium peroxymonosulphate, also known as permonosulphate
  • Permonosulphates oxidize by using the element from which oxidation derives its name - oxygen. Oxygen is a pure form of oxidizer
  • Like Chlorine, permonosulphate is an oxidizer that destroys organic contaminants such as ammonia in swimming pools
  • However, permonosulphate compounds do not kill or sanitize; they only control organics and the restrict the production of chloramines
  • This allows the Chlorine to do its job as a sanitizer
  • Unlike superchlorination, which is carried out to cure water problems such as strong odours or eye and skin irritation after they occur, permonosulphates are effective in preventing these problems from developing because they do not contain Chlorine
  • Instead, they oxidize waste through the use of oxygen
  • They do not go through the various stages of chloramine formation to achieve chlorination breakpoint, but react directly with the ammonia to produce chloride and nitrogen
  • No matter how little of the Non-chlorine shock you add, at least some of the organic contaminants will be destroyed, and no additional chloramines will be formed
  • This overcomes one possible danger of superchlorination, namely that of overdosing
  • If a pool is 'overdosed' with a Non-chlorine shock it doesn't really matter; swimming can be resumed after the permonosulphate has been diluted, after 30 minutes or so with the pump running
  • In fact, the excess permonosulphate will remain in the water, and be there ready to destroy any contaminants that may enter the pool from bather waste and other sources
  • Permonosulphates are 100-percent soluble and will not leave a residue or bleach vinyl liners or swimming suits
  • Because they are not Chlorine-based, it is not necessary to calculate how much to add to beat a given chloramines problem
  • Permonosulphates help prevent chloramines from forming, so whatever quantity is applied will have some positive benefit
  • Unlike superchlorination, which requires you to calculate how much Chlorine to add to correct problems, and how often to do so, permonosulphates are generally added at the rate of 700g per 50m³ (1 pint per 10,000 US Gal) on a weekly basis
  • Permonosulphates are effective at controlling the formation of the chloramines which cause odours, reduce disinfection and cause eye and skin irritation
  • Permonosulphates have a low pH of about 2.3 to 3 and can cause an acidic condition to occur, so steps must to be taken to counteract this if it occurs by application of pH-plus powder/granules
  • Permonosulphates are also safer to store and handle than chlorine products, because they will not ignite or release chlorine gas

Permonosulphates are, unfortunately, more expensive than liquid Chlorine. That’s life!
