- draw water from the pool and pass it through the filtration system and any other equipment such as a Saltwater Chlorinator, Ozone Generator, Heater, etc., before returning it to the pool

With constantly rising electricity costs it makes absolute sense to choose a pump that is just the right size for your pool and filter - there is no advantage, and there are many disadvantages, to fitting an oversized pump

An oversized pump will: -

  • Increase your power bills
  • Drive filtered dirt right through the filter and back into the pool
  • Empty the filter media from a sand-filter during a backwash
  • Overstrain plumbing and pipe-work

Pump Troubleshooter

- not much goes wrong with pool pumps but, if you have a problem with one, this will help you solve it

Pump will not start

- possible causes and cures

  • No power supply to the pump - check the supply
  • The pump is not switched on - switch it on
  • The circuit breaker has tripped - re-set the breaker
  • The pump is set to ‘Auto’ and the timer is preventing the pump from switching on - change the timer to ‘Manual’
  • The impeller is clogged with debris - remove the pump, disassemble and clear the impellers
  • The start capacitor is defective (pump buzzes but does not turn) - replace the capacitor
  • The motor shaft is corroded and preventing the pump from turning - repair or replace as required

The pump does not prime

- possible causes and cures 

  • There is no water in the pump strainer basket chamber - fill the chamber with water
  • The pump lid is not tightened fully - remove lid and re-tighten
  • The pump lid O-ring is damaged, allowing air to enter the strainer basket chamber - replace the O-ring
  • The pool water level is below the skimmer, allowing air to be drawn into the pump - close the skimmer valve and open the bottom drain valve, adjust water level in pool
  • The valves are incorrectly positioned - re-position the valves
  • There is an air leak on the suction side of the pump - tighten all joints on the suction side of the pump

- possible causes and cures

  • The filter is clogged with trapped particles - clean and rinse the filter
  • The return line (Jets)  valve is not fully open - open the valve
  • The pressure gauge is defective - replace gauge
  • The Jets line has a restriction - locate and remove the restriction

- possible causes and cures

  • There is an air leak in the suction line - tighten all seals on the suction side of the pump
  • The strainer basket is full - remove the basket, clean and replace
  • The pump impeller is clogged - remove the pump and clean the impeller
  • Incorrectly positioned valves - set valves to ‘Filtration
  • There is a restriction in the suction line - locate and remove the restriction
  • Defective pressure gauge - replace the gauge
